Syrah

26615 visitors
Wines made from Shiraz are often quite powerfully flavoured and full-bodied. The variety produces wines with a wide range of flavor notes, depending on the climate and soils where it is grown, as well as other viticultural practices chosen. Aroma characters can range from violets to berries, chocolate, espresso and black pepper. No one aroma can be called typical though blackberry and pepper are often noticed. With time in the bottle these primary notes are moderated and then supplemented with earthy or savory tertiary notes such as leather and truffle. Secondary flavor and aroma notes are those associated with several things, including winemakers’ practices, and terroir.

Food Pairing: Pairs well with grilled and barbecued meats, pork and venison, or fish and poultry that are very light on sauces. Nice with a hunk of rustic bread and olive oil.

2005 Syrah, "Guyzer Block"
Russian River Valley

Harvesting late in the season can be scary as winemakers hang their fruit while praying for no rain. And when you START your Syrah harvest on Halloween, well, that’s downright te ...morerrifying! But mild, dry weather prevailed and we held off picking his steep, hillside estate Syrah until it was at the peak of perfection. We planted Chave Clone Syrah in this vineyard in 1996 and we follow the Cote Rotie tradition of fermenting the Syrah with about 2% Viognier grapes. The results are staggering. The wine shows cool-climate blackberry fruit with beefy notes all at the same time, and with only 15% new oak aging, the pure fruit quality really comes through. We dropped half of all the Syrah fruit in the vineyard to insure that the tannins were totally ripe, and the resulting texture is pure crushed velvet. The hints of white pepper on the finish keep the palate intrigue going. It's everything you love about the exotic nature of Syrah with a pretty-side that you will not be able to leave alone. This 2005 already took home top honors at the 2007 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition... even before its official release!

2005 Russian River Valley Syrah
Russian River Valley

The Russian River Valley is renowned for producing world class Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Zinfandel and less known but equally excellent Syrah. The moderate climate with well-drained ...more, loamy soils and cool morning fog keeps the temperatures from getting too hot and allows the exposed fruit to ripen evenly. We are excited to add this varietal to our collection.

Fresh blueberry and plum notes with a hint of blackberry predominate on the nose with vanilla and licorice. This wine has firm tannins framed by toasty oak with hints of black pepper and pipe tobacco; followed by a lingering finish. Versatile with many foods, Syrah pairs well with grilled meats, Mediterranean-style dishes and cheese.

2005 Syrah

From the Estate Vineyard in Paicines, located at one of the highest and steepest points on the property, the Syrah block is planted in exceptionally well-drained decomposed granite ...more soils. This helps keep berry size minimal due to the limited water availability. The resulting fruit, dense in color and rich in tannins and flavor intensity, was fermented in small open-top tanks to extract every nuance from the berries and skins.

2005 Cherry Ridge Vineyard Syrah
Green Valley-Russian River Valley

This newly released, lush, cool-climate Syrah comes from the heart of the Green Valley appellation. It retains the focused blueberry fruit, bright acidity and moderate alcohol so ...morecharacteristic of our area, but at the same time offers an enveloping lushness. In the nose this wine entices with aromas of blueberry, black cherry and nutmeg. It follows in the mouth with wonderfully plush tannins that carry its dark flavors of black cherry, boysenberry and toffee through to a lingering sweet finish. This is a syrah that keeps you wanting more. It’s a wonderful match to salty cheeses like aged Gouda and Gruyere, or savory fowl or meat dishes. This is truly a wine that the winemaker enjoys, and hopes that you will too.

2004 Paradise Road Vineyard Syrah
Santa Barbara County

For the very first time, we are proud to introduce the 04 Paradise Road Syrah. The grapes for this wine come from one of the most unique and picturesque vineyards located right off ...more Hwy 154, halfway in between our valley and Santa Barbara. Due to its inland location, it is a very warm site, but still enjoys a consistent maritime influence. We aged the wine completely in French oak barrels, 50% were new and 50% were 3 year old barrels. The extended barrel aging – 25 months!- imparted nice toasty, spicy oak notes to the wine.

This is a dynamic addition to our single-vineyard syrah portfolio. Big, forward dark fruit flavors are complemented by racy, peppery spice notes. The wine is rich and round texturally with good tannin structure and balance. We hope you enjoy our new addition as much as we do! 97 cases made.

2005 Syrah, Dry Stack Vineyard
Bennett Valley

With our third vintage of Dry Stack Syrah we’re beginning to get a clearer picture of what this vineyard is all about. We’ve seen it hot ('03 & '04) and we’ve seen it cool (' ...more05) but certain characteristics shine through each year.

Aromas of cherries, dark plum and tobacco invite you in, followed by a palate of lively cherry infused with darker fruit undertones, a touch of smoky cedar and a silky, elegant mouthfeel. Delicious now (with 1-2 hours of decanting) the balance of fruit and acidity is delightful, making this a wine that should age wonderfully for years to come.

2005 Syrah, Kalen's Big Boy Blend
Sonoma County

True to the spirit of its name, Kalen’s Big Boy Blend must have a big personality. That said, the cooler '05 vintage added a splash of refinement to this high-spirited bottling a ...mores well.

Inky dark in the glass, the nose offers up rich, black fruit, black and white pepper, a faint tease of eucalyptus and fertile earth tones. Then a sip unleashes dark cherry, pomegranate, black licorice and cola nut, all lovingly embraced by fine, sweet tannins. While a tad of patience will be handsomely rewarded, if you decide to open one sooner rather than later, a brisk decanting and a couple of hours on the table will enhance it’s youthful charms.
