Syrah

26607 visitors
Wines made from Shiraz are often quite powerfully flavoured and full-bodied. The variety produces wines with a wide range of flavor notes, depending on the climate and soils where it is grown, as well as other viticultural practices chosen. Aroma characters can range from violets to berries, chocolate, espresso and black pepper. No one aroma can be called typical though blackberry and pepper are often noticed. With time in the bottle these primary notes are moderated and then supplemented with earthy or savory tertiary notes such as leather and truffle. Secondary flavor and aroma notes are those associated with several things, including winemakers’ practices, and terroir.

Food Pairing: Pairs well with grilled and barbecued meats, pork and venison, or fish and poultry that are very light on sauces. Nice with a hunk of rustic bread and olive oil.

2005 Rattlesnake Rock Syrah, Santa Cruz Mountains
Estate, Santa Cruz Mountains

The 2005 growing season was our longest and coolest of four released vintages. We picked the fruit in five separate picks starting on the 27th of September and finishing on October ...more 9th. Fruit quality was exceptional with small berries, ripe skins and small clusters. Yields were at two tons per acre. The finished wine is a deep garnet with notes of wildberry, sage, corriander, mocha, roasted meat and cigar box on the nose. The dense, compact tannins coat the mouth and the kirsch, rhubarb, roasted fig, cigar box and pepper lay comfortably across the mid-palate. With decanting, the fruit and floral qualities begin to emerge with a sustained finish that builds and lingers. If it is anything like the 2002, 2003 or 2004 vintages that came before it, it will reward several years of bottle age that will allow the the tannins to meld into the increasingly expressive dark fruit core. This is a big wine that balances strength with suppleness.

2000 Syrah
Kurtzer Vineyard, Livermore

Our Kurtzer Syrah was harvested late in the 2000 season and had a huge tannic mouth feel when it was young. How do we tame this delightful wine without robbing the fruit? Due to ou ...morer unique circumstances, we were able to age this for over four years in new French oak barrels. Compared to bottle aging, barrel aging gives a much more rapid rounding and softening of the tannins. As a four year old, our Kurtzer retains its regal nose which is well supported by mature French Oak. The oak influence actually peaked in year three and is now calmed down to playing a supporting role to the rightful star - jammy berry fruit. One of the things we like best about making single varietal, single vineyard releases is that after a time we recognize specific characteristics of each vineyard. The smoky bacon element, typical of this vineyard from our earlier vintages is evident, but as a reserved element. We think this wine is remarkable, four years in barrel has given a wine of beautiful round character that typically only comes from a big wine that has aged for 15-20 years in the bottle. Unfiltered and unfined, the Kurtzer may still throw sediment.

2005 Double-Down Syrah

Our most popular wine. Preceded by 90+ Robert Parker scores, this crowd pleaser features purplish black color. Rhone like. Incredibly ripe, rich, and bright fruit. Collaboration of ...more blackberries, blueberries, crème de cassis, and violets. Generous wine, juicy, smoky, earthy, jubilant and just plain fun. A hedonistic turn-on at a reasonable price. Always one of our most popular wines. Beautifully integrated Remond French Oak. We think this may be the most concentrated and rich version of this popular wine so far.

OUR "SIDEWAYS" WINE. Yes indeed, this is our featured wine in the film “Sidewaysâ€. In the continuity of the film, Jack and Miles taste Blackjack Ranch Maximus on “Monday†m ...moreorning following breakfast in Solvang as their first stop of the day. The tasting begins 30 minutes 16 seconds into the movie. The tasting room host proclaims: “This is our Syrah.†Miles lifts his glass to his nose and exclaims “Oooh!†Jack inquires: “Yeah, you like it?†Miles enthusiastically and emphatically responds: “That’s a BIG one!!!†(Our “Sideways†stills of their tasting are located on the east and west walls of the Tasting Room) The Syrah Maximus exhibits a deep ruby/purple color in addition to subtle, but sweet aromas of barbecue smoke, blackberries, cassis, licorice, saddle leather, and earth. It is a powerful, layered, ripe wine with moderately high tannin as well as admirable purity and persistence. Give it another 12-18 months of bottle age, and enjoy it over the following decade.â€

Our fourth vintage of Syrah is our most elegant ever! This wine emphasizes grace and complexity rather than heavy extraction. It is beautifully balanced with fine tannins and a gre ...moreat sense of polish. It has wonderful Syrah character and is more Northern Rhone in style with smoked meat, pomegranate, and black currant aromas; The flavors are consistent with the nose with complex black cherry as well as gamy/earthy flavors. Due to the soft tannins it can be enjoyed upon release but will improve for another 5 years.

2002 Brassfield Estate Syrah
Round Mountain Vineyard

This signature vineyard of five and a half acres was planted in 2001 and represents the first Syrah produced from the Monte Sereno vineyard located at 2100 ft. in elevation on the ...morewestern slopes of High Valley. The soils on this ridge top are primarily broken shale characteristic of Franciscan formation. Much of this vineyard has a northern exposure which delays ripening by a couple of weeks giving the fruit some additional “hang-timeâ€, and subsequently softer, velvety tannins.

The grapes were allowed to ripen to full maturity, and then were crushed, destemmed and the must was inoculated for yeast fermentation. The wine was left on the skins for 11 days before gently pressing off the skins to avoid harsher tannin extraction, and allowed to finish primary and secondary fermentations before settling and racking to barrel. Approximately 30% new oak was infused to the entire lot and allowed to age for 22 months before bottling.
