Syrah

26594 visitors
Wines made from Shiraz are often quite powerfully flavoured and full-bodied. The variety produces wines with a wide range of flavor notes, depending on the climate and soils where it is grown, as well as other viticultural practices chosen. Aroma characters can range from violets to berries, chocolate, espresso and black pepper. No one aroma can be called typical though blackberry and pepper are often noticed. With time in the bottle these primary notes are moderated and then supplemented with earthy or savory tertiary notes such as leather and truffle. Secondary flavor and aroma notes are those associated with several things, including winemakers’ practices, and terroir.

Food Pairing: Pairs well with grilled and barbecued meats, pork and venison, or fish and poultry that are very light on sauces. Nice with a hunk of rustic bread and olive oil.

2004 Tolosa 1772 Syrah
Edna Valley

A saturated blue-black color in the glass, the aromas remind us of black pepper-rubbed salumi, gunpowder, and star anise. A dry herb and floral quality continues in the mouth, with ...more lavender, chamomile, and sage balancing the big blueberry and blackcurrant fruit. We’ve watched this wine evolve in barrel and bottle, developing delicious nuances slowly over time. We anticipate more of these revelations, in the glass and in the cellar, over the next several years.

2004 Tolosa Syrah
Edna Valley

The color is a deep garnet-hued red, so dense that it borders on black. Initial aromatic notes are of herb de Provence, especially lavender, with candied almond, cassis and spice a ...morelso contributing. The deeper layers of scent reveal white pepper, oak resin and cocoa. The palate is of medium structure with even, balanced tannins. Chocolate and toffee notes complete the flavors introduced by the bouquet.

2005 Petite Sirah
Calaveras County

This Petite Sirah comes from the Salt Springs valley in Calaveras. It is an early ripener with great natural tannin structure that does not inhibit the darker ripe fruit character ...mores. The 2005 growing season started with a late bloom followed by a fairly average warming season which enabled us to acclimate the vines to the intense summer in this warm region. The fruit load was thinned to a projected 2.5 tons per acre, quite a small crop for these rich deep soils. To achieve full maturation of fruit without sacrificing natural acidity, we harvested this in the middle of September.

I pro ...moremise to be faithfully Twisted in thought, word, and deed, without regard to race, color, sex, national origin, personal hygiene, or hairstyle, and will to the best of my ability, uphold this glass, with its aromas of dark berry and leather, plummy flavors and firm tannins before consuming it forthwith.

Syrah is a varietal that is the major component of the great wines of the Rhone valley.

2004 Syrah
Dry Creek Valley

This 2004 Syrah has me thinking of a cleaner more sophisticated version of our 1997 Syrah, which makes sense, since that was another early harvest. This full-bodied, dark Syrah ha ...mores a sweet core of blackberry/cassis fruit (classic 2004) along with our signature smoky, spicy complexity. It has excellent depth, richness and balance. The tannins in this wine will allow it to age for 5 to 7 years, though the lush fruit might convince you to eschew patience, and enjoy it much sooner. So be it.

2004 Syrah Benchland
Dry Creek Valley

This Benchland Reserve is our most dramatic statement with Syrah. While the 2004 shows the riper side of Dry Creek Syrah, it still shows the vineyard character we have come to app ...morereciate from this site: dark color and full body along with blackberry, smoke and chocolate aromas/flavors. In 2004, dried grapes gave us more intense blackberry liqueur fruit and a lush texture on the palate. Though this wine is built to age 7 to 10 years, the ripe tannins will tempt you to drink it before then.

2004 Syrah
Napa Valley

The Syrah vines were planted in 1997, 1300 ft. above the Napa Valley floor on Howell Mountain. A combination of certified Barossa (Australian Shiraz) and Hermitage (Rhône Valley) ...moreclones were selected and planted on the northern most section of the VIADER property. The terrain was so steep and rocky that we needed the help of dynamite and jackhammers to breakup and fracture the rocky hillside. The 2004 Viader Syrah shows the spice and red fruits of the Australian clone and the aromatic nuances of the Rhône Valley clone. Our hillside brings them together in an elegant and powerful dance.

2005 El Dorado Syrah
El Dorado County

Our Syrah comes to us from a two acre vineyard in Somerset in El Dorado County. The soils are typical of hillside vineyards, shallow and well drained. The fruit was harvested in ½ ...more ton picking bins. Treated similarly to Pinot Noir, a small amount was fermented as whole clusters and the entire must was chilled down to cold soak for extraction. After a spontaneous fermentation started with indigenous yeast we did punch downs every two hours also helped for extraction of flavors and depth of color. The wine was barrel aged for 18 months in neutral American oak. The resulting wine is dark and full with Rhone style richness. The slightly floral aromas precede earthy flavors, rich fruit character, subtle cloves and the moderate tannins call for aging.

2003 Syrah
Rutherford, Napa Valley

The 2003 vintage began relatively late, which was a bit unexpected after an early bud break. A cool and rainy May slowed the vine growth, though. This was followed by a cooler than ...more average summer, which made for slow even ripening of the grapes. The fully ripened Syrah fruit was harvested over 8 days mid-October 2003 at an average of 26 Brix. The wine was fermented primarily in stainless steel open top tanks with 2 to 3 punch downs per day for an average of 14 days. After pressing the wine was racked to barrel where it underwent malolactic fermentation and aging for 18 months. Our 2003 Napa Valley Syrah is reflective of meticulous vineyard care, a cool, slow vintage, and careful handling in the cellar. The wine displays a deep red color and exhibits aromas of blackberries, cherries and licorice. The fruit notes are further lifted by the inclusion of 2% Viognier. On the palate, this wine offers concentrated flavors of wild berry and sweet oak. Rich fruit and soft tannins give this Syrah a lingering, supple finish. The wine can be enjoyed immediately or will gain further complexity over the next 4 – 5 years with proper cellaring.

2000 Shiraz
Napa Valley

The 2000 vintage began early with budbreak occurring in the third week of March. Rapid vine growth gave an indication of an early harvest, with the vines flowering by the third wee ...morek of May in favorable conditions. Severe heat in mid June caused some newly set berries to desiccate, thus reducing the crop. Ideal weather from the end of June through September ensured full flavor and tannin development. Our 2000 Shiraz shows what the perfect balance of intense sunlight, warm days and cool nights contributes to the intensity of this noble grape. The wine displays a blackish red color with lifted aromas of blackberries, plums and licorice. On the palate the flavors of wild cherries and sweet vanilla are wrapped in supple tannins for a mouth filling wine. While these soft tannins allow for immediate enjoyment, proper cellaring will reward with increasing complexity over the next 4 to 10 years.

2004 Shiraz
Alexander Valley

The fruit was harvested in the cool morning hours on the estate, then crushed to tank. Fermentation commenced after approximately 2 days of resting on skins. At relatively warm tem ...moreperatures, the grape skins were hand plunged to achieve the desired color and structure for the wine. Part of this blend was run from skins early for barrel fermentation, while the balance was left on skins for a short maceration time prior to final pressing. The wine was transferred directly to barrel for 17 months of maturation.
