Syrah

26591 visitors
Wines made from Shiraz are often quite powerfully flavoured and full-bodied. The variety produces wines with a wide range of flavor notes, depending on the climate and soils where it is grown, as well as other viticultural practices chosen. Aroma characters can range from violets to berries, chocolate, espresso and black pepper. No one aroma can be called typical though blackberry and pepper are often noticed. With time in the bottle these primary notes are moderated and then supplemented with earthy or savory tertiary notes such as leather and truffle. Secondary flavor and aroma notes are those associated with several things, including winemakers’ practices, and terroir.
More information on Syrah
Food Pairing: Pairs well with grilled and barbecued meats, pork and venison, or fish and poultry that are very light on sauces. Nice with a hunk of rustic bread and olive oil.

2003 All Night Radio

This blend of old vines Thompson and Colson Canyon is the classic marriage of warm and cool climates. Most of the cooperage here is from the Italian firm of Gamba, who supply such ...morewineries as Angelo Gaja, Tignanello, and Sassicaia, with much of their wood. Gamba wraps itself around this wine like a pair of midnight blue cashmere gloves. The nose is dense blueberry, black cherry, and blackberry. The palate is thick and plush with soft finishing tannins.

2003 Syrah, The Fight

The 2003 The Fight is almost exclusively from the Richard Perry Vineyard in the Coombsville area of Napa County. This site always gives raw steak, plum and red licorice flavors. Th ...moreis year we also blended in a dash of wine from the old vines section of the Thompson Vineyard (Santa Barbara County), which interlaced the Perry flavors with the essence of soy and iodine. Interestingly, both vineyards are planted with the Estrella clone. Thompson is even own-rooted. It was raised in 100% new French oak for 14 months, bottled by gravity, unfined and unfiltered.

2003 Some Like It Red

The 2003 Some Like It Red is comprised of four neutral barrels of Syrah from seven year old vines in block two of the Thompson Vineyard near Santa Barbara and one barrel of Pinot i ...moren a new Francois Freres barrel from Keefer Ranch in the Green Valley.

The wine has a deep crimson color with rose at the rim. The initial aromatics suggest bilberry, raspberry, then cranberry and a savory, meaty Syrah note that makes your mouth water. The palate impression is deep, sweet and long. We recommend an hour’s worth of decanting. Try it at your table with grilled meats.

2002 Sugardaddy

Sugardaddy is 100% Syrah from the 2002 vintage. The composition is 40% Colson Canyon, 40% Rolling Hills, and 20% Thompson (Los Alamos). We feel that this three-vineyard blend of di ...morestinctive climates and soils has given us our best wine yet in the Red Car trolley series.

"SD" is inky blue/black in color, much darker than the two previous releases. The nose, while still reticent, offers up blueberry, black cherry, blackberry, smoked meat, and melted tar. 50% new, Seguin Moreau barrels lend a sweet oak component that helps knit everything together. SD has more weight and presence on the palate than its predecessors. The finish seems to last for minutes. In short, it’s killer juice.

2002 Syrah, The Fight

The 2002 The Fight is 100% Syrah from the Richard Perry Vineyard, which is in the Coombsville area of Napa County. Planted in 1989, it is one of the older Syrah vineyards in Califo ...morernia. The Fight has always been exotic, perhaps due to its location in a warmer climate. The nose has elements of melted licorice, rare steak, plums, and blackberries (the kind you find growing at the edge of a country road at the very peak of ripeness). The palate is chock full of black fruit, plum and hint of licorice. It was raised in 100% new French oak for 18 months, bottled by gravity, unfined and unfiltered.

2002 The Table

The fruit is from the Thompson Vineyard, planted in the late 80’s near the tiny town of Los Alamos in Santa Barbara County. Thompson is a very cool site ripening last of all our ...morevineyards. The wine is opaque in the center, flashing blue-red at the rim. The nose offers a ton of blueberries, a hint of raspberry, violets and what some people call an iodine or sea shell-like like character. There is a huge mouthful of fruit here, but considerable structure, or “cutâ€. The tannins are firm but rounded. Thompson makes long lived wines.

2002 Some Like It Red

The 2002 Some Like It Red is comprised of 75% Syrah from the Thompson and Colson Canyon Vineyards, both of which are located in Santa Barbara County, and 22% Pinot Noir from the Cl ...moreouds Rest Vineyard on the Sonoma Coast. A dash of Cabernet Sauvignon (3%) from the Shadow Canyon Vineyard near Templeton finishes this intriguing blend.

Instead of the center to rim midnight hour black of our 100% Syrahs, Some Like It Red has a lighter, pre-dawn meniscus. The nose starts with black Syrah fruit (maybe a whiff of black currant from the Cab) and a hint of meat, but then strawberry, rhubarb, rose petal and a bit of vanilla make for a very complex bouquet. The Syrah provides weight and texture. The Pinot leavens everything nicely. The flavors echo the aromatics. The finish is long.

more about The Stranger
Red Car Wine Co.
Rate this wine

2001 The Stranger

The Stranger is 100% Syrah blended from two vineyards – 59% San Marcos (Paso Robles) and 41% Colson Canyon (Santa Maria). San Marcos produced an elegant, aromatic wine with smoke ...mored meat and boysenberry notes. Colson was a savage, blue-black monster, redolent of blueberries and blackberries. Both wines were gently de-stemmed then crushed by hand. Each wine was fermented with indigenous yeasts, and given long macerations on the skins - 30 days for San Marcos, 60 for Colson.

The color is dark purple. The nose (at bottling) suggests a “summer pudding†of boysenberry, blackberry and blueberry with a hint of black olive, grilled meat (steak) and a touch of vanilla from the 25% new Seguin Moreau “Haut Brion†barrels. The flavors are deep and layered with a creamy, almost decadent mouthfeel.

The Dreaming Detective is pure Syrah - 90% is from the Thompson Vineyard in Santa Barbara County and 10% comes from San Marcos. This is our, uh, “big gun†of 2001. It’s the l ...moreast wine of that vintage that went into our 40% new Haut Brion barrels and the last wine to be bottled. The story of this wine is that despite its size (15% alcohol) there is so much fruit and such perfect balance that it seems almost refined.

2001 Some Like It Red

2001 Some Like It Red “Right Bank†is our rather liberal interpretation of a St. Emilion. The wine is 88% Cabernet Franc from the San Marcos Vineyard in Paso Robles. Syrah make ...mores up the remaining 12%. The wine spent 14 months in 40% new Seguin Moreau, Haut Brion barrels.

The color is a deep crimson. The aromatics open slowly, revealing Cuban tobacco leaf, red currant, crème de cassis, plum compote, and subtle oak. The mouth-feel is soft and velvety. The flavors are very rich with plum, more crème de cassis and vanilla. The finish on this lasts 40 seconds to a minute. With air, (and a bit decanter time to really start to shine) the damn thing smells so good it’s hard to get your nose out of the glass in order to get to the finish.
