Syrah

26593 visitors
Wines made from Shiraz are often quite powerfully flavoured and full-bodied. The variety produces wines with a wide range of flavor notes, depending on the climate and soils where it is grown, as well as other viticultural practices chosen. Aroma characters can range from violets to berries, chocolate, espresso and black pepper. No one aroma can be called typical though blackberry and pepper are often noticed. With time in the bottle these primary notes are moderated and then supplemented with earthy or savory tertiary notes such as leather and truffle. Secondary flavor and aroma notes are those associated with several things, including winemakers’ practices, and terroir.

Food Pairing: Pairs well with grilled and barbecued meats, pork and venison, or fish and poultry that are very light on sauces. Nice with a hunk of rustic bread and olive oil.

2005 NICHOLLS Syrah, Santa Barbara County
White Hawk Vineyard

We sourced our fruit from a vineyard located on the south-facing slope of Cat Canyon, a side canyon of the Los Alamos Valley in Santa Barbara County. Planted at 900 feet of elevati ...moreon on pure sand, water and nutrients are immediately drained off forcing the vines to work extra-hard to survive. The resulting yields are miniscule and the berries are intense. A strong core of acidity is complemented by elements of spice, meat and blackberries. A terrific, big Rhone-style Syrah with just enough acidity to make it perfect with food. Try throwing a hanger steak on the grill and opening a bottle of this wine!

2004 Syrah
Los Carneros, Madres Vineyard

Fruit for the 2003 Los Carneros was from Las Madres Vineyard in the Sonoma Carneros, and we have so enjoyed this fruit that we are happy now to endow it as a vineyard designate! Th ...moree nose is a heady blend of lavender, grilled meat, savory herbs and white pepper. The palate offers lush layers of dark fruits, especially jammy blackberry and cola qualities. This wine is drinking beautifully right now, and, though it pairs perfectly with grilled meats or game dishes, the favorite pastime now in the Tasting Room is to search for the perfect chocolate dessert to accompany the wine!

2003 Estate Syrah
Sonoma Valley

The last of the 2003 offerings to roll out, our Estate Syrah has benefited tremendously from the long growing season it encountered and its extended bottle aging. In a tasting incl ...moreuding all our 2004 Syrahs, the 2003 Estate tasted like it had the greatest aging potential of the bunch. The nose is a steely bouquet of crushed rocks, white flowers, lavender and black pepper. Rich blackberries open the palate with a variety of dense black fruits, crème de cassis and firm allspice. The wine packs a tannic punch at the end so time in the decanter or a long nap in the cellar will help realize all this offering’s potential.

We bottled the wine in June 2007 after 18 months in barrel with the true Syrah character of baked blueberries readily apparent. And the tannins, well the tannins are right and good — they are broad across the palate giving weight that is in balance with the density of the wine.

2008 Fiery Nights - Syrah
Briarwood Estate Vineyard

Fiery Nights is our pure expression of Westside Paso Robles Syrah. From a single block of calcareous soil at Briarwood, it is comprised of clones 383 and Alban 2. This 100% Syrah i ...mores meant to highlight the layers and complexity of the varietal, as well as express how our terroir influences its character. Our proximity to the Pacific Ocean and the consistent afternoon flow of cool Templeton Gap breezes allows our Syrah to achieve characters of both a warm and cool climate. Seeking finesse over power, the fruit was hand picked in September at ideal ripeness and treated gently, including multiple hand sorting and whole berry fermentation. The resultant wine is balanced, complex, and pure, just as we wanted it.

The nose speaks of rich, juicy plums highlighted by baking spices, licorice and sweet ginger notes. The palate is round and balanced with good weight that avoids being heavy. Flavors mirror the aromas, with dark fruits taking center stage. To sum it up clearly, Fiery Nights is a wine with old world class and new world sass.
