Wines made from Shiraz are often quite powerfully flavoured and full-bodied. The variety produces wines with a wide range of flavor notes, depending on the climate and soils where it is grown, as well as other viticultural practices chosen. Aroma characters can range from violets to berries, chocolate, espresso and black pepper. No one aroma can be called typical though blackberry and pepper are often noticed. With time in the bottle these primary notes are moderated and then supplemented with earthy or savory tertiary notes such as leather and truffle. Secondary flavor and aroma notes are those associated with several things, including winemakersâ€™ practices, and terroir.

Food Pairing: Pairs well with grilled and barbecued meats, pork and venison, or fish and poultry that are very light on sauces. Nice with a hunk of rustic bread and olive oil.

More robust and complex than the High Density, this yearâ€™s Donnaâ€™s has effusive aromatics of black cherry, dark plum, black pepper, black licorice, tobacco leaf and Moroccan spice. There are other subtle hints of boysenberry kirsch, purple flowers, dried sage, charcoaled meats, asphalt and wet leather. The wineâ€™s mouthfeel matches up to this intensity of flavor adding breadth and complexity. The wine finishes slightly youthful at this stage but certainly offers a bright future as it continues to harmonize.

Somewhat less intense than my Camel Hill Syrah, its brig ...moreht fruit-driven flavors are accented with peppery spices and soft, rounded tannins. Keith Watts, a multi-generational farmer, grows Syrah for me in Lodi â€“ his vineyards in the Central Valley give the wine jam-packed cherry/berry flavors. Jerry Yates, a biodynamic farmer in Mendocino County, provides me with Cabernet Sauvignon that adds tannin, acid and spice to the wine. Sixteen months of barrel aging in French and American oak add an extra layer of toasty spice to this velvet-wrapped hammer of a wine. Enjoy it with pastas in cooked tomato sauce and Italian sausage, grilled vegetables, lamb stew and spicy pizzas.

It is a cool climate Syrah with the flavor concentration that comes from low-yielding vines. Its dark, earthy character is perfectly balanced by rich fruit sweetness resulting from ripeness, not from sugar. This aromatic wine smells like blackberries and violets, while in the mouth it is a big-bodied, rich wine with almost distilled black fruit flavors and a hint of eucalyptus. Soft, ripe tannins and a powerful, long finish are hallmarks of the Camel Hill Syrah. Big as it is, itâ€™s still excellent to enjoy sipping by itself, but it is also delicious with grilled and roasted meats.

Our Syrah was left on the vine for an extra six days to bring out the most ripe fruit flavor. We brought it in just before the flavors would have turned raisiny. The fermentation p ...moreroceeded slowly, and this results in more extraction from the skins. French oak barrels were chosen to accentuate the dark fruit flavors.

The aromas have a distinct caramel tone overlaying deep plum and cassis smells. There is a slight toasty character and some cedar in the nose as well. The flavors are full of intense black currant and black cherry. The barrels add some smokey accents and vanillin texture. This is a powerful wine that should continue to get better with time in the cellar.

W ...moree harvested very small berries on small clusters. The fruit came in clean and the bins smelled of white pepper and berries.

The wine exhibits a dark purple color with slight brick around the edges. Intense aromas of violets, plums and cassis. Lots of licorice, tar and roasted black fruits emerge with time. Fruit tones are fairly developed with hints of leather creeping into the finish. This is medium, big bodied wine with enough weight to smooth out the cedar and leather-tinged finish.
