2005 NICHOLLS Syrah, Santa Barbara County

We sourced our fruit from a vineyard located on the south-facing slope of Cat Canyon, a side canyon of the Los Alamos Valley in Santa Barbara County. Planted at 900 feet of elevation on pure sand, water and nutrients are immediately drained off forcing the vines to work extra-hard to survive. The resulting yields are miniscule and the berries are intense. A strong core of acidity is complemented by elements of spice, meat and blackberries. A terrific, big Rhone-style Syrah with just enough acidity to make it perfect with food. Try throwing a hanger steak on the grill and opening a bottle of this wine!
