Syrah

26332 visitors
Wines made from Shiraz are often quite powerfully flavoured and full-bodied. The variety produces wines with a wide range of flavor notes, depending on the climate and soils where it is grown, as well as other viticultural practices chosen. Aroma characters can range from violets to berries, chocolate, espresso and black pepper. No one aroma can be called typical though blackberry and pepper are often noticed. With time in the bottle these primary notes are moderated and then supplemented with earthy or savory tertiary notes such as leather and truffle. Secondary flavor and aroma notes are those associated with several things, including winemakers’ practices, and terroir.

Food Pairing: Pairs well with grilled and barbecued meats, pork and venison, or fish and poultry that are very light on sauces. Nice with a hunk of rustic bread and olive oil.

2005 Cherry Ridge Vineyard Syrah
Green Valley-Russian River Valley

This newly released, lush, cool-climate Syrah comes from the heart of the Green Valley appellation. It retains the focused blueberry fruit, bright acidity and moderate alcohol so ...morecharacteristic of our area, but at the same time offers an enveloping lushness. In the nose this wine entices with aromas of blueberry, black cherry and nutmeg. It follows in the mouth with wonderfully plush tannins that carry its dark flavors of black cherry, boysenberry and toffee through to a lingering sweet finish. This is a syrah that keeps you wanting more. It’s a wonderful match to salty cheeses like aged Gouda and Gruyere, or savory fowl or meat dishes. This is truly a wine that the winemaker enjoys, and hopes that you will too.

2005 Rattlesnake Rock Syrah, Santa Cruz Mountains
Estate, Santa Cruz Mountains

The 2005 growing season was our longest and coolest of four released vintages. We picked the fruit in five separate picks starting on the 27th of September and finishing on October ...more 9th. Fruit quality was exceptional with small berries, ripe skins and small clusters. Yields were at two tons per acre. The finished wine is a deep garnet with notes of wildberry, sage, corriander, mocha, roasted meat and cigar box on the nose. The dense, compact tannins coat the mouth and the kirsch, rhubarb, roasted fig, cigar box and pepper lay comfortably across the mid-palate. With decanting, the fruit and floral qualities begin to emerge with a sustained finish that builds and lingers. If it is anything like the 2002, 2003 or 2004 vintages that came before it, it will reward several years of bottle age that will allow the the tannins to meld into the increasingly expressive dark fruit core. This is a big wine that balances strength with suppleness.

2005 Steel Plow Syrah
Sonoma Valley

There are four clonal selections in the approximately 10 acre site: Durrell, Bien Nacido, Syrah Noir and Alban. All the grapes are fermented in small open-topped fermenters. The wi ...morene was aged for 14 months in 30% new oak. A gentle egg white fining proceeded bottling in January 2007.

The wine exhibits a pronounced floral aroma along with chamois leather and plum preserves. In the mouth the tannins are extremely supple with enough acidity to lift the fruit profile and add consideration length to the wine's finish. A conservative but appropriate alcohol of 13.7% keeps everything in harmonious balance.

2000 Syrah, The Window

Red Car's debut release is called The Window. It is 100% Syrah blended from selected parcels of the San Marcos Vineyard in Paso Robles and the Colson Canyon Vineyard in Santa Maria ...more. The San Marcos fruit was picked at 25.5 brix. It was practically bursting with wild blueberry, white pepper and hickory smoke. The Colson fruit came in at a lower 24 brix, but zesty and firm and with the snap of a fresh Gravenstein apple. The Window has loads of rich fruit, smoke and spice with a racy, bracing acidity. It is drinkable upon release but should evolve stylishly for 5 to 7 years. It spent a year in barrels made for the Grand Vin at Chateau Margaux.

2006 Syrah, Speakeasy

Speakeasy is our “coolest†wine so far — in its climate, fruit, and style. It is dominated by cooler climate flavors because over 70% of its grapes hail from true cool climat ...moree regions. This evolving style is the result of trying to produce more sophisticated and graceful syrah. The lush tastes of wild Maine blueberries, Ranier cherries, licorice and Kona coffee are balanced and refined. The percentage of new oak has been lowered, too, allowing the mouthfeel to be linear yet silky. Scents of crushed peppercorn, fresh grass, and clove come off the nose with a hint of orange rind. Elegance has spoken.
