Syrah

26267 visitors
Wines made from Shiraz are often quite powerfully flavoured and full-bodied. The variety produces wines with a wide range of flavor notes, depending on the climate and soils where it is grown, as well as other viticultural practices chosen. Aroma characters can range from violets to berries, chocolate, espresso and black pepper. No one aroma can be called typical though blackberry and pepper are often noticed. With time in the bottle these primary notes are moderated and then supplemented with earthy or savory tertiary notes such as leather and truffle. Secondary flavor and aroma notes are those associated with several things, including winemakers’ practices, and terroir.
More information on Syrah
Food Pairing: Pairs well with grilled and barbecued meats, pork and venison, or fish and poultry that are very light on sauces. Nice with a hunk of rustic bread and olive oil.

2004 Syrah
Los Carneros, Madres Vineyard

Fruit for the 2003 Los Carneros was from Las Madres Vineyard in the Sonoma Carneros, and we have so enjoyed this fruit that we are happy now to endow it as a vineyard designate! Th ...moree nose is a heady blend of lavender, grilled meat, savory herbs and white pepper. The palate offers lush layers of dark fruits, especially jammy blackberry and cola qualities. This wine is drinking beautifully right now, and, though it pairs perfectly with grilled meats or game dishes, the favorite pastime now in the Tasting Room is to search for the perfect chocolate dessert to accompany the wine!

2003 Estate Syrah
Sonoma Valley

The last of the 2003 offerings to roll out, our Estate Syrah has benefited tremendously from the long growing season it encountered and its extended bottle aging. In a tasting incl ...moreuding all our 2004 Syrahs, the 2003 Estate tasted like it had the greatest aging potential of the bunch. The nose is a steely bouquet of crushed rocks, white flowers, lavender and black pepper. Rich blackberries open the palate with a variety of dense black fruits, crème de cassis and firm allspice. The wine packs a tannic punch at the end so time in the decanter or a long nap in the cellar will help realize all this offering’s potential.

2005 Syrah
Mencarini Vineyards - Lodi

This is our first Syrah coming out of our own Mencarini Family Vineyards, and a proud completion for Abundance Vineyards.

The deep garnet color of this wine is typic ...moreal of most Syrahs, however the plum and oak nose of this wine set it apart from its competition.

Our 2005 Syrah has rich plum flavors balanced with ample tannins and oak. The long, fruity finish of this wine proves why it is a perfect example of Syrah, rich in flavor with a robust yet balanced structure.

Enjoy this wine with rich meat dishes, wild game, and anything in a heavy sauce.

2005 Syrah, "Guyzer Block"
Russian River Valley

Harvesting late in the season can be scary as winemakers hang their fruit while praying for no rain. And when you START your Syrah harvest on Halloween, well, that’s downright te ...morerrifying! But mild, dry weather prevailed and we held off picking his steep, hillside estate Syrah until it was at the peak of perfection. We planted Chave Clone Syrah in this vineyard in 1996 and we follow the Cote Rotie tradition of fermenting the Syrah with about 2% Viognier grapes. The results are staggering. The wine shows cool-climate blackberry fruit with beefy notes all at the same time, and with only 15% new oak aging, the pure fruit quality really comes through. We dropped half of all the Syrah fruit in the vineyard to insure that the tannins were totally ripe, and the resulting texture is pure crushed velvet. The hints of white pepper on the finish keep the palate intrigue going. It's everything you love about the exotic nature of Syrah with a pretty-side that you will not be able to leave alone. This 2005 already took home top honors at the 2007 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition... even before its official release!

2002 Hammer Syrah
California

My Italian surname, Martella, translates to “hammerâ€, and this delicious wine “nails down†classic Syrah character. Somewhat less intense than my Camel Hill Syrah, its brig ...moreht fruit-driven flavors are accented with peppery spices and soft, rounded tannins. Keith Watts, a multi-generational farmer, grows Syrah for me in Lodi – his vineyards in the Central Valley give the wine jam-packed cherry/berry flavors. Jerry Yates, a biodynamic farmer in Mendocino County, provides me with Cabernet Sauvignon that adds tannin, acid and spice to the wine. Sixteen months of barrel aging in French and American oak add an extra layer of toasty spice to this velvet-wrapped hammer of a wine. Enjoy it with pastas in cooked tomato sauce and Italian sausage, grilled vegetables, lamb stew and spicy pizzas.

2003 Santa Cruz Mtns Syrah
Camel Hill Vineyard

This vintage is the second time I've harvested Syrah grapes from the Camel Hill Vineyard in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Camel Hill Syrah reflects its French origins in a New World pe ...morersonality. It is a cool climate Syrah with the flavor concentration that comes from low-yielding vines. Its dark, earthy character is perfectly balanced by rich fruit sweetness resulting from ripeness, not from sugar. This aromatic wine smells like blackberries and violets, while in the mouth it is a big-bodied, rich wine with almost distilled black fruit flavors and a hint of eucalyptus. Soft, ripe tannins and a powerful, long finish are hallmarks of the Camel Hill Syrah. Big as it is, it’s still excellent to enjoy sipping by itself, but it is also delicious with grilled and roasted meats.

2003 Mendocino Syrah
Fairbairn Ranch Vineyard

This ruby-red Syrah has all the rich brightness and luscious fruit flavors that characterize the finest wines made from this grape variety. Plump plum and cherry flavors lead the w ...moreay, with a smooth, almost jammy texture that radiates into layers and layers of fruit-dominated taste. Smooth tannins add structure without bite or tartness, thanks to the unique climate of Mendocino County: its warm days and very cool evenings contribute to an exceptionally long hang time for red wine grapes, allowing full ripening of skin and seed tannins. All the Syrah grapes for this wine were grown at the Fairbairn Ranch, an organically, biodynamically-farmed hillside vineyard owned by Joe and Julie Golden, and farmed by Jerry Yates. This Mendocino Syrah will stand up to hearty, grilled lamb and beef dishes, paired with roasted root vegetables or cooked tomato sauces.vegetables, lamb stew and spicy pizzas.

2004 Syrah - Dakine Vineyard
Russian River Valley

DaKine is a Hawaiian Pidgin word that means "the best". Need we say more? This special Syrah is traditionally farmed by hand, producing a true field blend. After harvest, all grape ...mores are crushed then fermented in the same tank with a blend of Zinfandel for spiciness, Malbec for deep berry notes, Petite Syrah for structured tannins, and Carignane and Grenache to bring out earthiness. This is a wine that honors the simple life, and is meant to be shared with closest friends and family. Or, the occasional attractive stranger, of course.

2004 Syrah
Russian River

The 2004 vintage in the Russian River Valley was is remembered as one that delivered a small crop of high quality grapes. The vines budded very early and heat spikes in mid summer ...moreassured the crop ripened well with ample natural acidity. Grapes from Jim Ledbetter’s Preston Ranch Vineyard, a hillside vineyard overlooking the Russian River, make about 40% of this wine. Grapes from Scott Kerson’s vineyard on Fitch mountain, Vino Farm’s Silk Road Vineyard and Jeff Webber’s ranch on Chalk Hill Road make up the rest.

This release of the RRV Syrah shows an inviting minty note that blends into the dark berry character as the wine opens up in the glass. A wild fennel spiciness leads to a lush, velvety mid-palate and reappears on the long finish. As with all the wines of Longboard, the point of this wine is to strike a balance of components that delivers a complex and layered experience that is true to the variety and the growing season.

2006 Rosella's Vineyard Syrah
Santa Lucia Highlands

Once again we have used the technique of whole cluster fermentation with our Rosella’s Vineyard Syrah in order to gain the complexity and the white pepper flavor that comes from ...moreSyrah stems. In 2006 the Syrah was fermented with 50% whole cluster and 50% destemmed fruit. The clones at Rosella’s are 877 and Bien Nacido and we used one half ton of each. From the warm June and July in 2006, the Syrah vines got a head start on ripening, even though the fall was anything but warm. This is a wine that will need at least 3 years in the cellar to begin to open and show off its ripe blackberry and pepper characteristics, although 24 hours in a decanter can give you a sneak preview of the wine.

2005 Estate Syrah – Donna's
Santa Rita Hills

Also from one of our small lot collection of wines, and named for Ron Melville’s wife, Donna, this is 100% Santa Rita Hills estate fruit from a 3.6 acre section planted to two cl ...moreones, Estrella and Clone 1 Shiraz, on three different low-vigor rootstocks.

More robust and complex than the High Density, this year’s Donna’s has effusive aromatics of black cherry, dark plum, black pepper, black licorice, tobacco leaf and Moroccan spice. There are other subtle hints of boysenberry kirsch, purple flowers, dried sage, charcoaled meats, asphalt and wet leather. The wine’s mouthfeel matches up to this intensity of flavor adding breadth and complexity. The wine finishes slightly youthful at this stage but certainly offers a bright future as it continues to harmonize.

2005 Russian River Valley Syrah
Russian River Valley

The Russian River Valley is renowned for producing world class Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Zinfandel and less known but equally excellent Syrah. The moderate climate with well-drained ...more, loamy soils and cool morning fog keeps the temperatures from getting too hot and allows the exposed fruit to ripen evenly. We are excited to add this varietal to our collection.

Fresh blueberry and plum notes with a hint of blackberry predominate on the nose with vanilla and licorice. This wine has firm tannins framed by toasty oak with hints of black pepper and pipe tobacco; followed by a lingering finish. Versatile with many foods, Syrah pairs well with grilled meats, Mediterranean-style dishes and cheese.
