Syrah

16892 visitors
Wines made from Shiraz are often quite powerfully flavoured and full-bodied. The variety produces wines with a wide range of flavor notes, depending on the climate and soils where it is grown, as well as other viticultural practices chosen. Aroma characters can range from violets to berries, chocolate, espresso and black pepper. No one aroma can be called typical though blackberry and pepper are often noticed. With time in the bottle these primary notes are moderated and then supplemented with earthy or savory tertiary notes such as leather and truffle. Secondary flavor and aroma notes are those associated with several things, including winemakers’ practices, and terroir.

Food Pairing: Pairs well with grilled and barbecued meats, pork and venison, or fish and poultry that are very light on sauces. Nice with a hunk of rustic bread and olive oil.

2005 Syrah
Russian River Valley

This Russian River Syrah comes from Alegria Vineyard. This vineyard is located on rolling landscape near the town of Healdsburg. This vineyard benefits from cool breezes that bring ...more in the fog from the ocean in the morning and recedes to warm sunny days. These are perfect conditions for our cool climate Syrah. This wine is violet in color with notes of cedar, spice, cassis, blackberry, and earth. This wine is elegant in structure with a great finish. We produced less than 225 cases of this wine.

2002 Brassfield Estate Syrah
Round Mountain Vineyard

This signature vineyard of five and a half acres was planted in 2001 and represents the first Syrah produced from the Monte Sereno vineyard located at 2100 ft. in elevation on the ...morewestern slopes of High Valley. The soils on this ridge top are primarily broken shale characteristic of Franciscan formation. Much of this vineyard has a northern exposure which delays ripening by a couple of weeks giving the fruit some additional “hang-time”, and subsequently softer, velvety tannins.

The grapes were allowed to ripen to full maturity, and then were crushed, destemmed and the must was inoculated for yeast fermentation. The wine was left on the skins for 11 days before gently pressing off the skins to avoid harsher tannin extraction, and allowed to finish primary and secondary fermentations before settling and racking to barrel. Approximately 30% new oak was infused to the entire lot and allowed to age for 22 months before bottling.

2004 Syrah
Humbodlt County

This 2004 Humboldt County Syrah is a single-block selection which was picked on October 14th. Cold fruit was destemmed into small one-tonfermenters and punched down three times a d ...moreay until the wine achieved dryness. A variety of different strains of yeast were employed in order to attain as much complexity as possible. The wine was pressed and hand-bucketed into 2-year-old Rouseau, French oak barrels. The wine remained on the lees until the following spring when it was gently racked and a small amount of new Hungarian oak was utilized to finish the wine. After two years of barrel age, the wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered -- as are all of our efforts.

Notes of fresh ground coffee, kirsch, mulberry, dark red cherry, game, and sassafras lead into a spicy, dark red-fruited, lush mid-palette, with a smooth texture, and ripe tannins. This wine is rich and full flavored, and shows the spicy, leathery, gamy qualities that make Syrah such an intriguing varietal.

2004 Syrah- Reed's
Humbodlt County

This is our first release of this particular designation. Named after our son, the 2004 Reed’s Syrah has distinctive character. Its dense red fruit and spice is reminiscent of fine ...more Grenache. We selected the two barrels which best exemplified these special qualities.

The color is beautiful deep, electric, garnet red. The seductive nose on this Syrah displays ripe boysenberry, kirsh, and white pepper. Red-fruitedflavors of dense black raspberry, pomegranate, cranberry and mulberry on the mid-palette are pure and well balanced with a long finish of ground coffee and spices. This single block, two-barrel selection, is firm and has a nice grip from substantial tannins which add structure and richness to this amazingly distinctive wine.
