Zinfandel is grown by over 200 producers, and now accounts for over 23% of the total vineyard territory. Its quality and character largely depend on the place of cultivation, the age of the vineyard, and the winemaking technology. Zinfandel became so popular that in 1991 the association of Zinfandel Advocates and Producers (ZAP) was founded with the objective to promote the varietal and wine, and support scientific research on Zinfandel - particularly its origin.

2005 Zinfandel, Old Vine

Old Vine? Perhaps â€œAncient Vineâ€ is a better designation. This vineyard was planted in 1896 and Guy acquired it (it sits at the foot of his property) 100 years later. These old ...more-timers tend to ripen unevenly, so instead of harvesting both ripe and overripe fruit, Guy took the fanatical route and made several passes through the vineyard, picking only the perfectly ripe clusters each pass, over the 2 week period. The small lots were fermented separately and married together before going into his 2 and 3-year-old Pinot Noir barrels (no new oak to mask the amazing brambly, Old-Vine, brown spice flavors). The 2005 absolutely jumps out of the glass. The fresh raspberry aromas would make a perfume designer jealous! Fresh, juicy, forward fruit - The wine is medium-bodied and never heavy-handed, and you will find yourself at the bottom of your glass well before you know it. Better have 2 bottles on hand. It also grabbed top honors at the 2007 San Francisco Wine Competition this Spring!

The grapes were hand-harvested on October 12th, 2004 at the peak of their maturity. In the cellar, the must was fermented in stainless steel tanks for 10 days. The wine was then aged for 9 months in American oak barrels.

Classic brambly aromas, raspberry, chocolate and spice mingle together in this rich and flavorful Zinfandel. Its big, firm structure accentuates vibrant fruit and oak. This elegant wine offers layers of complexity, firm tannins and a long finish. Enjoy with Spicy Lamb Stew with Black Pepper and Green Olives, Osso Buco with Tomatoes and Herbs.

The â€œSouthern Exposureâ€ designation for our wines denotes that we feel the wine has very special qualities. So far, we only had two wines that we felt were worthy of this honor ...more. These were our 2002 and 2003 Zinfandels that were made with grapes coming from the Original Grand Pere Vineyard which is over 100 years old. We feel that the 2004 version of this wine which was also made from grapes mostly coming from the Original Grand Pere Vineyard is worthy of becoming a member of the Southern Exposure family of wines.

The 2004 C.G. Di Arie Zinfandel, â€œSouthern Exposureâ€Â® is an incredibly complex wine. Some of the flavors characteristic to Zinfandel as white and black pepper and brier are combined with black current (cassis) and plum which gives the wine a hint of sweetness. The finish has a spicy character with the cardamom background which makes this wine very exotic. This well balanced wine with its unusually long finish fills your mouth without being tannic. Our 2004 â€œSouthern Exposureâ€ Zinfandel has the elegance which compares to a well made Pinot Noir.
