Zinfandel

Zinfandel is grown by over 200 producers, and now accounts for over 23% of the total vineyard territory. Its quality and character largely depend on the place of cultivation, the age of the vineyard, and the winemaking technology. Zinfandel became so popular that in 1991 the association of Zinfandel Advocates and Producers (ZAP) was founded with the objective to promote the varietal and wine, and support scientific research on Zinfandel - particularly its origin.

Food Pairing: Pairs well with barbecue foods like chili, burgers and fried chicken -heavy on the spice and flavor. Zinfandel can hold its own out of a plastic glass on a picnic table or served in crystal with an elegant Chateaubriand.

We planted our Estate Zinfandel in 1975. Our vineyard is 5 acres. It's dry farmed meaning there isn't any irrigation. The only water the vines receive is the winter and spring rain ...mores. The yield is quite small, usually around 3 tons. The concentration of flavors and taste is astounding. This wine has black fruit in the nose, a very sweet mid-palate and good balancing acidity in the finish.

A good wine to be served with blue and soft ripening cheeses, hardy stews and bittersweet desserts.

We love to just drink this Zin for its lush juicy fruit and the layers of interesting spice and earthy richness. Full of freshly-ground black pepper aromas and some nice cedary-spi ...morecy oak components, it has a rich creamy mouthfeel despite its firm tannic backbone. This vintage shows a touch of gaminess that I find quite reminiscent of a nice Cotes du Rhone. That wild note is beautifully compatible with game meats, especially duck, or actually with any grilled meats. I also had a nice paring which surprised meâ€”Alaskan halibut with a porcini mushroom sauce. We are still playing with good recipes--if I come across some good ones I will post them on the site!
