Zinfandel

21485 visitors
Zinfandel is grown by over 200 producers, and now accounts for over 23% of the total vineyard territory. Its quality and character largely depend on the place of cultivation, the age of the vineyard, and the winemaking technology. Zinfandel became so popular that in 1991 the association of Zinfandel Advocates and Producers (ZAP) was founded with the objective to promote the varietal and wine, and support scientific research on Zinfandel - particularly its origin.
More information on Zinfandel
Food Pairing: Pairs well with barbecue foods like chili, burgers and fried chicken -heavy on the spice and flavor. Zinfandel can hold its own out of a plastic glass on a picnic table or served in crystal with an elegant Chateaubriand.

This Zinfandel is mad ...moree from grapes grown on vines planted in the 1930's. The hallmarks of this wine offer complex aromas and flavors, a slightly sweet middle and a dry finish.

2006 Viognier
Russian River Valley

Like our 2005, our 2006 Viognier was produced from grapes grown on Catie's Corner Vineyard in the Russian River Valley, which is a vineyard developed by Sara Lee Kunde. Catie is Sa ...morera Lee’s daughter. The crop this year was normal, but summer weather and a good growing season (more like 2002) produced fruit which produced wine more complex, fruity and with a fuller, balanced mouth feel.

The 2006 Viognier has a complex nose of apricot, peach, pear, citrus and wild flowers. The mouth feel is harmoniously balanced between richness and lively acidity. The finish is marked by long-lasting flavors reflecting the fruity and floral aromas.

2006 Zinfandel/Petite Sirah
Taylor Mountain Vineyard & Elder Vineyard

Taylor Mountain Vineyard is nestled just below the saddle-shaped peak of Taylor Mountain, as depicted on the front label painting by well-known Sonoma Valley artist Michael Holland ...more. When John Shakleford Taylor settled in Sonoma Valley in 1853, his land holdings were the largest under one name in all of Sonoma County. On his most prized land he planted Zinfandel and Mission grapes. The Watkins Family has farmed Zinfandel on this breathtaking property since 1979, and we have found that the dark fruit and spicy flavors of Petite Sirah blend perfectly with the boysenberry jam and pepper components of Zinfandel. Elder Vineyard in Dry Creek Valley is carefully tended by Vineyard Micromanagement.

These low-yielding Zinfandel and Petite Sirah vines produce a concentrated and complex wine that is a great example of hillside-grown Zinfandel. The wine has humongous fruit yet perfectly balanced acidity and alcohol. It pairs well with spicier, saltier dishes such as paella with peppered chicken and spicy sausage or baby back ribs.

2002 Zinfandel
Chiles Valley

Andrew Lane zinfandel comes from the Chiles Valley appellation of Napa Valley located at 900 ft. elevation. As the crow flies the vineyard lies on the volcanic backside of Stag's L ...moreeap. The vineyard enjoys warmer temperatures than Napa and is influenced by afternoon breezes that ebb and flow from the great, water body mass of Lake Berryessa to the east. These breezes extend the growing season and coupled with the young volcanic soil produce a zinfandel that is absolutely phenomenal. Truly one of the finest zinfandels we have ever tasted! High alcohol with big, blueberry and chocolate flavors to back it up we suggest drinking this to finish an evening or close to where you will sleep. WOW!!

2005 Sadie Upton Zinfandel

If you have been with Karly winery for any time, you don’t need to be introduced to this wine made from grapes planted by Sadie in 1922. A lot of people are going to call this th ...moree greatest Sadie ever, and I would agree with them if power and spice is the criterion. I don’t remember another vintage over twenty-seven years that was so muscled. I usually savor the wine for its finesse and flinty berry-cherry quality. This vintage overpowers the flint with spice and cherry cola. Where did that come from? As is often the case with Sadie’s grapes, the power comes as an unexpected surprise as we do not strive for excessive ripeness attempting instead to emphasize the elegance and balance of the vineyard. Too bad, this year the grapes had something different in mind We never overrule decisions made by the grapes, so here you are folks, Sadie on Balco.

2004 Old Vine Zinfandel
Cucamonga Valley

Every year we craft a Zinfandel that speaks directly to its American heritage. The fruit comes from several small lot, hundred year old vineyards in the Cucamonga Valley, and the w ...moreine is aged exclusively in the best American Oak to more fully accentuate the Zinfandel grape's inherent spiciness. The result? A hearty, sophisticated wine of plentiful black cherry and berry flavors, complex spice and pepper notes, and the continual hints of fresh cut tobacco. Fortunately, our Zinfandel program is a perpetual gold medal winner. The previous vintage was also judged to be Best Zinfandel of Southern California at the California State Fair. However, we think the 2004 is probably our best Zin to date. It will be drinking at its prime 2008-2010.
