Syrah

26678 visitors
Wines made from Shiraz are often quite powerfully flavoured and full-bodied. The variety produces wines with a wide range of flavor notes, depending on the climate and soils where it is grown, as well as other viticultural practices chosen. Aroma characters can range from violets to berries, chocolate, espresso and black pepper. No one aroma can be called typical though blackberry and pepper are often noticed. With time in the bottle these primary notes are moderated and then supplemented with earthy or savory tertiary notes such as leather and truffle. Secondary flavor and aroma notes are those associated with several things, including winemakers’ practices, and terroir.
More information on Syrah
Food Pairing: Pairs well with grilled and barbecued meats, pork and venison, or fish and poultry that are very light on sauces. Nice with a hunk of rustic bread and olive oil.

2004 Syrah, Dry Creek Valley
Dry Creek Valley

The Handley Vineyard Syrah is rich and complex. Much of this complexity is due to the fact that it is made from two Syrah clones from our Dry Creek Valley vineyard. Clone 877 provi ...moredes dark raspberry and chocolate notes, and clone 470 contributes much of the structure and tannins. The wine offers aromas of rose and licorice. The licorice notes continue on the front of the palate, moving into strawberries and chocolate through the long textured finish.

2005 Syrah
Redwood Valley, Kazmet Vineyard

Kazmet Vineyard, farmed by Leila Kazimi and Neal Mettler, lies in the western foothills of Redwood Valley. This small valley (covering about 35 square miles), was first settled and ...more planted by Italian immigrants in the 1850’s, but did not gain official status as an appellation until1997. The Syrah vines in Kazmet Vineyard are beautiful head-trained specimens, planted about nine years ago. California coastal ranges protect the vineyard from much of the cooling influence of the Pacific Ocean, allowing Syrah grapes to come to full ripeness.

Reminiscent of a Rhone style Syrah, this wine displays characteristics of bright red berry fruit with underlying blackberry and blueberry intensity, enhanced by a touch of tobacco.

The aromas are quite forward , with the Viognier adding significant notes of peach and apricot to the intense raspberry-like fruit of the Syrah. Though dominated by the fresh fruit ...more character, this wine also shows hints of licorice and spice. In the mouth it is more elegant and refined than our EnglandCrest bottling, and promises more enjoyment in the near term.

2004 Syrah
Los Alamos

This Syrah was produced from the Syrah Noir clone, harvested during a warmer than normal vintage year with the fruit coming from our cool climate Los Alamos vineyards (78%) and our ...more warmer Solvang Valley View Vineyard (22%). After traditional punchdowns to mix the cap and juice it spent 18 months in French Oak. This bold Syrah is dark and rich with warm earth, spice and leather tones, and black stone fruit on the palate. It will age well, gaining smoothness and complexity for several years.

2005 Double-Down Syrah

Our most popular wine. Preceded by 90+ Robert Parker scores, this crowd pleaser features purplish black color. Rhone like. Incredibly ripe, rich, and bright fruit. Collaboration of ...more blackberries, blueberries, crème de cassis, and violets. Generous wine, juicy, smoky, earthy, jubilant and just plain fun. A hedonistic turn-on at a reasonable price. Always one of our most popular wines. Beautifully integrated Remond French Oak. We think this may be the most concentrated and rich version of this popular wine so far.

2005 Syrah

Syrah was AWOL from our lineup from the 2000 through 2003 vintages. For ten years we had a lot of success with the variety. Then came three years of trouble with the wines, which w ...moree finally traced back to the vineyard. Luckily, we liked the variety so much, we planted a new vineyard in 2000 using an unusual trellis which we thought Syrah would like. In 2004, we pulled out the problem vineyard and made the first wine from the new vineyard. Many of you are drinking this wine, and it is remarkable. First because it is just plain good, but also because it is just amazing such a good wine could be made from four year old grapes, and on the first attempt. We were worried the bar had been set so high. Now we feel really good because the 2005 has picked up right where the 2004 left off. If you have a bottle of each for comparison, you will find that the 2004 is a bit more refined due to a year in the bottle, but the 2005 is basically the same wine with a little more flavor intensity. This should continue as the vines mature. You just can’t beat a good Syrah at the table. We deliberately make the wine a bit subdued. We don’t want to lose any of the meaty-currant varietal flavor and balance

2000 Syrah
Kurtzer Vineyard, Livermore

Our Kurtzer Syrah was harvested late in the 2000 season and had a huge tannic mouth feel when it was young. How do we tame this delightful wine without robbing the fruit? Due to ou ...morer unique circumstances, we were able to age this for over four years in new French oak barrels. Compared to bottle aging, barrel aging gives a much more rapid rounding and softening of the tannins. As a four year old, our Kurtzer retains its regal nose which is well supported by mature French Oak. The oak influence actually peaked in year three and is now calmed down to playing a supporting role to the rightful star - jammy berry fruit. One of the things we like best about making single varietal, single vineyard releases is that after a time we recognize specific characteristics of each vineyard. The smoky bacon element, typical of this vineyard from our earlier vintages is evident, but as a reserved element. We think this wine is remarkable, four years in barrel has given a wine of beautiful round character that typically only comes from a big wine that has aged for 15-20 years in the bottle. Unfiltered and unfined, the Kurtzer may still throw sediment.

2003 Terroir Select Syrah
Mendocino

The Stonehedge 2003 Terroir Select Syrah is producted exclusively from grapes grown in the famed "EaglePoint Ranch" Vineyard in Mendocino County.

EaglePoint ...moreRanch's elevation is between 1800 and 2000 feet, so this wine is considereda Mountain Syrah. This vineyard is a low yield vineyard, yielding no more than 3-4 tons per acre.

Due to its high elevation, the fruit doesn't ripen until late October. The yeast used to make this wine is called "Syrah Yeast" and it is an isolate from Norther Rhone.

This wine is crushed and cold soaked for 2-3 days on skins, before inoculation. The primary fermentation was completed in 14 days, then racked and moved to small barrels. This wine has aging potential of 15 years.

2005 Steel Plow Syrah
Sonoma Valley

There are four clonal selections in the approximately 10 acre site: Durrell, Bien Nacido, Syrah Noir and Alban. All the grapes are fermented in small open-topped fermenters. The wi ...morene was aged for 14 months in 30% new oak. A gentle egg white fining proceeded bottling in January 2007.

The wine exhibits a pronounced floral aroma along with chamois leather and plum preserves. In the mouth the tannins are extremely supple with enough acidity to lift the fruit profile and add consideration length to the wine's finish. A conservative but appropriate alcohol of 13.7% keeps everything in harmonious balance.
