Syrah

26681 visitors
Wines made from Shiraz are often quite powerfully flavoured and full-bodied. The variety produces wines with a wide range of flavor notes, depending on the climate and soils where it is grown, as well as other viticultural practices chosen. Aroma characters can range from violets to berries, chocolate, espresso and black pepper. No one aroma can be called typical though blackberry and pepper are often noticed. With time in the bottle these primary notes are moderated and then supplemented with earthy or savory tertiary notes such as leather and truffle. Secondary flavor and aroma notes are those associated with several things, including winemakers’ practices, and terroir.

Food Pairing: Pairs well with grilled and barbecued meats, pork and venison, or fish and poultry that are very light on sauces. Nice with a hunk of rustic bread and olive oil.

2005 Syrah, Upper Bench Vineyard
Santa Barbara County

"The 2005 Io Syrah Upper Bench, bearing the name of princess Io from Greek mythology, is an excellent illustration of the complexity, spice and full, lush tannins that result from ...morethe Upper Bench vineyards. The wine is well structured with aromas of white and black pepper, leather and smoke. The flavors are concentrated with hints blackberry, blueberry, spice and a toasty, smokey finish. The texture is richly layered with firm tannins and a lingering fruit finish." - Jonathan Nagy, Winemaker

2004 Estate Syrah
Temecula Valley, Miramonte Estate Vineyard

"The Estate" is bold, ethereal, earth and spicy -- a red wine to take Temecula Syrah to new heights. Based on Entav clones 383 and 470, our Estate Syrah opens with lush flavors of ...moreblueberries, raspberries, blackberries and plums. It is underscored with nuanced flavors of violet and cinnamon, a subtle undercurrent of oak, and a thin line of fresh mocha. Excellent acid and tannin structure and a velvety mouth feel allow it to develop a rich, luxurious finish. We've aged it 24 months in hand selected French and American oak. If you like incredible red wines, this may be the wine for you.

2004 Syrah
Napa Valley

The Syrah vines were planted in 1997, 1300 ft. above the Napa Valley floor on Howell Mountain. A combination of certified Barossa (Australian Shiraz) and Hermitage (Rhône Valley) ...moreclones were selected and planted on the northern most section of the VIADER property. The terrain was so steep and rocky that we needed the help of dynamite and jackhammers to breakup and fracture the rocky hillside. The 2004 Viader Syrah shows the spice and red fruits of the Australian clone and the aromatic nuances of the Rhône Valley clone. Our hillside brings them together in an elegant and powerful dance.

Dark purple hue. Please pass the white pepper! This Garys’ Syrah is a perfect example of cool-climate Syrah. Layers of vanilla bean, blueberries, and bacon comprise of this rich Syrah, while not being over-powering. This wine has the stuffing to last 10+ years. 2005 Rattlesnake Rock Syrah, Santa Cruz Mountains
Estate, Santa Cruz Mountains

The 2005 growing season was our longest and coolest of four released vintages. We picked the fruit in five separate picks starting on the 27th of September and finishing on October ...more 9th. Fruit quality was exceptional with small berries, ripe skins and small clusters. Yields were at two tons per acre. The finished wine is a deep garnet with notes of wildberry, sage, corriander, mocha, roasted meat and cigar box on the nose. The dense, compact tannins coat the mouth and the kirsch, rhubarb, roasted fig, cigar box and pepper lay comfortably across the mid-palate. With decanting, the fruit and floral qualities begin to emerge with a sustained finish that builds and lingers. If it is anything like the 2002, 2003 or 2004 vintages that came before it, it will reward several years of bottle age that will allow the the tannins to meld into the increasingly expressive dark fruit core. This is a big wine that balances strength with suppleness.

OUR "SIDEWAYS" WINE. Yes indeed, this is our featured wine in the film “Sidewaysâ€. In the continuity of the film, Jack and Miles taste Blackjack Ranch Maximus on “Monday†m ...moreorning following breakfast in Solvang as their first stop of the day. The tasting begins 30 minutes 16 seconds into the movie. The tasting room host proclaims: “This is our Syrah.†Miles lifts his glass to his nose and exclaims “Oooh!†Jack inquires: “Yeah, you like it?†Miles enthusiastically and emphatically responds: “That’s a BIG one!!!†(Our “Sideways†stills of their tasting are located on the east and west walls of the Tasting Room) The Syrah Maximus exhibits a deep ruby/purple color in addition to subtle, but sweet aromas of barbecue smoke, blackberries, cassis, licorice, saddle leather, and earth. It is a powerful, layered, ripe wine with moderately high tannin as well as admirable purity and persistence. Give it another 12-18 months of bottle age, and enjoy it over the following decade.â€

2003 Santa Cruz Mtns Syrah
Camel Hill Vineyard

This vintage is the second time I've harvested Syrah grapes from the Camel Hill Vineyard in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Camel Hill Syrah reflects its French origins in a New World pe ...morersonality. It is a cool climate Syrah with the flavor concentration that comes from low-yielding vines. Its dark, earthy character is perfectly balanced by rich fruit sweetness resulting from ripeness, not from sugar. This aromatic wine smells like blackberries and violets, while in the mouth it is a big-bodied, rich wine with almost distilled black fruit flavors and a hint of eucalyptus. Soft, ripe tannins and a powerful, long finish are hallmarks of the Camel Hill Syrah. Big as it is, it’s still excellent to enjoy sipping by itself, but it is also delicious with grilled and roasted meats.

2005 Syrah
Napa Valley

Vintage 2005 provided some early hurdles but with attention to detail in the vineyards and with patience to hold harvest until the late season warmth, the vintage actually provided ...more the platform for spectacular wines. A cool, late and somewhat wet spring slowed the start of the growing season and the even and relatively moderate summer conditions pointed to a late harvest. Serious crop thinning and canopy management of the excess vigor was therefore imperative to obtain the desired concentration and ripeness levels. These timely actions early on coupled with excellent late season warmth allowed the slow and steady ripening that we love, creating optimum concentration of pigment, tannin, flavor, and Syrah varietal expression.
