| The vineyards are located at the top of Spring Mountain, at elevation 2,000ft, and planted on steep terraces that follow the contour of the land. In some places, the grade averages in excess of 35%. Mountainside farming is very challenging. The vines must struggle to reach nutrients and water in the soil and, as a result, yield only one to two tons per acre. The elements of sun, temperature, and well-drained porous soils give an advantageous water stress to the vines and contribute to the depth, richness and character of the wines. Grapes are harvested by hand; vineyard row by row, as optimum ripeness and maturity is reached. Fermentation is done in small batches. | St. Helena, CA

This deeply purple wine is extremely aromatic, with large amounts of black raspberry, crushed violet spice, and cocoa nibs as well as underlying vanilla cedar spice. The palette is ... more rich with ripe cassis and tobacco spice, as well as a dusty black earth character. The tannins are firm and chalky with crisp mountain acidity to balance. More raspberry and fennel linger on the long finish. The wine is very young still and could be consumed so with hearty food, or left to develop beautifully over the next 9-12 years.

The palate is medium to full ... more in body, typical to form for quality merlot, with deeper pomegranate fruit and anise. The tannins are round, full, and balanced with the natural acidity. The finish is lingering and of sweet black licorice. This wine will only continue to improve over the next 5-7 years.

The me ... moredium body of the wine is surrounded by full bing cherry and a gravel/stone minerality. Subtle soft tannins and crisp acid make the wine lively. This is an accessible Pinot Noir in its youth, but will develop nicely over the next 3-4 years.
