Merlot

3471 visitors
Merlot is a red wine grape that is used as both a blending grape and for varietal wines. Merlot-based wines usually have medium body with hints of berry, plum, and currant. Its softness and fleshiness, combined with its earlier ripening, makes Merlot an ideal grape to blend with the sterner, later-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon. This flexibility has helped to make it one of the most popular red wine varietals in the United States and Chile.

2003 Reserve Merlot

The 2003 vintage was relatively cool and spring was rainy. Two short but strong heat waves in September were followed by a gentle Indian summer that allowed the grapes to finish th ...moreeir maturation. This resulted in fresh and tannic wines that are close in style to classical Bordeaux wines.

The Reserve Merlot comes from a single block that has a fairly high clay content. The fruit is harvested and fermented separately. Our Reserve Merlot always comes from this block, it always produces our best merlot. The wine was aged 22 months in French oak barrels on its lees and never racked. The lees coat the grape and oak tannins making the wine appear softer in its youth. It is an age worthy wine. With time it will show great purity, definition, complexity and finesse.

Napa Valley Estate Merlot

The Merlot varietal dominated our early years of winemaking, and as such, is the variety we are most experienced with. We discovered early on that our vineyard has considerable pa ...morerallels to vineyards in the esteemed Pomerol region of Bordeaux, France and sought to emulate their style. Our winemaker, Alison Doran, has made wine in the very region that we consider our model. The result is that our Estate Merlot is a very serious wine, often tasting like a fruity, moderately tannic Cabernet. Ruby in color, it has aromas of oak, spice and dark cherries. The mouth fills with the taste of cherries, sassafras and bell pepper. A light spiciness is derived from bay leaf, growing on trees that line the western edge of the vineyard. The tannins are gentle and the finish is long and silky.Available in 750ml, magnums and 3.0Liter bottles

Monterey

Merlot used to be a favorite of Jacques' before its overwhelming popularity resulted in the over-production of generic & bland wines which lacked the personality that Merlots were ...moreonce famous for. Our Merlot is intended to set the record straight and show that this wine can indeed have a distinct, appealing, and interesting personality. On the intense nose, classical plum pudding aromas share the stage with toasty vanilla and nutmeg notes. In the balanced mouth, a medium but friendly tannin structure leads to a long spicy finish. This smooth wine can be enjoyed on its own but has enough oomph to hold its own with any red meat dish.

2002 Mountain Estates Merlot

Our Mountain Estates Merlot captures the bold expression of fruit farmed on mountain vineyard sites. The mountain mesoclimate, created by higher altitude, steep terrain and rocky s ...moreoils, restricts vine growth and naturally limits vigor. The vines yield fewer berry clusters which are smaller in size with thick skins and boast saturated, intense flavors.

This a serious Merlot that offers extreme drinking pleasure. It exhibits aromas of black fruit with mineral and smoky cedar spice notes. Rich and intense, the wine is framed by sturdy yet balanced tannins, lush viscosity and flavors of chocolate, black fruit and cherries with a hint of ripe plum in the background.
