2004 Phenomenon
St. Helena

Phenomenon embodies the pinnacle of winemaking at Benessere. It is produced only in quantities commensurate with our highest expectations. As such, we feel that Phenomenon is a win ...moree that is age-worthy and substantial enough to pair with hearty dishes as well as elegant fare. This wine has aromas and flavors of dark, ripe cherries and plums, with notes of creamy and toasty oak, and a hint of vanilla. It is perfect to share with friends and family and to toast all joyous occasions. It will age well for the next decade or more.

This is the fifth release of our “Super-Napan” estate blend called “Phenomenon”. The blending of Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, Merlot and Syrah is a relatively new “phenomenon” for California. As such, we think it is fitting to name our wine after this occurrence. It is also patterned after some of the “Super-Tuscan” wines of Italy; wines which have crossed the boundaries of regulations and tradition, utilizing superior grape clones and artisan blending to make the best wine possible.

2004 Chaos Theory Cab/Zin Blend
Chiles Valley District

This wine is exciting from the moment it livens up your glass with brilliant ruby color and sapphire undertones. The fragrant nose has mocha java cocoa powder, toasted vanilla, and ...more rich dark fruit with a hint of lavender. Vigorous and long with great depth, this wine is densely layered with flavors of cassis, bittersweet chocolate shavings, blackberry fruit, burnt sugar, subtle cedar and a final zest of kumquat. This iconoclastic wine is forward and expressive, with an edgy newness. It blends the best of both worlds: the cabernet component is present in the structure and tannins and intense dark fruit, providing a dramatic frame for the exuberant, lush zinfandel component. The result is a vivacious yet seamlessly balanced wine that delivers a unique palate experience.

2003 Cain Five
Napa Valley

Those who know Cain know that our mantra is “complexity, balance, finish.” Ripeness goes without saying, but ripeness, per se, is not the goal, and over-ripeness would be our p ...morearticular bĂȘte noire. Like 2002, 2003 was warm and made for an early harvest, but, mercifully, it was not quite as hot as 2002. We were able to bring in grapes that were fresh, rich, and complex—the perfect fruit from which to develop the signature balance of Cain Five.

The 2003 is a classic Cain Five, reminiscent of 1992, 1993, 1995, and 1996. Ripe and balanced, with floral notes, the wine is a bit tighter and slightly less evolved than the 2002—which suggests that our 2003 Cain Five will age extremely well. It will drink well now and in the next few years, and it should also show well 10 to 15 years from now. This is a firmly structured wine—the nose is discretely subtle, a very pure cassis is hiding in the background (which bodes well)—it sings a quiet, clear note all the way through to the end. The full, sweet entry fills out to a satisfying mid-palate, leading to a long, smooth finish.

Our winemaking is simple: We believe that red wine is a partial extraction of the grape. Our goal

2002 Aida Red Wine

Deep ruby-garnet in color with intense exotic spice and distinct minerality on the nose, intermingled with sweet fig and tobacco notes and lush, ripe blackberry and black currant f ...moreruit. Full and round in the mouth, the dark fruit core is backed by complex and continually evolving coriander, clove, cassis and bittersweet chocolate elements. The distinctive stony minerality continues throughout the very lengthy finish. Velvety tannins and balanced acidity create the sense of approachability despite the wine’s youth—but we suggest cellaring this vintage for at least 2-3 years before drinking to fully appreciate the evolving complexity of it’s exotic spice, mineral and fruit components.
