Kenneth Volk Vineyards is located on Tepusquet Road, in the northeastern portion of the Santa Maria Valley AVA in Santa Barbara County, California. The property is located at the mouth of Tepusquet Canyon on the Sisquoc River Bench.

The vineyard and winery property was formerly the "original" Byron Winery (the "new" Byron Winery is located next door), established by Ken Byron Brown in 1981. In 1994 the winery was acquired by the Robert Mondavi Winery Corporation. Ken Volk purchased the building and land at the end of 2004, after over a year of negotiations. The sale included the winery and vineyard only - no brands, no wine, and no on-going business venture.

Ken was attracted to the property for a variety of reasons, including its beautiful, tranquil location along the ever-flowing Tepusquet Creek, and the oak and sycamore riparian habitat surrounding the winery. Another blessed feature of the site is its adjacency to some of the top Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vineyards in Santa Barbara wine country. As well, being located up Tepusquet Canyon, the winery is out of the wind tunnel of the Santa Maria mesa.

2004 Chardonnay, Sierra Madre Vineyard
Santa Maria Valley

In keeping with our model of creating complexity in the vineyard, the 2004 Kenneth Volk Vineyards Sierra Madre Chardonnay came from two separate vineyard blocks, planted to two dif ... moreferent clones of Chardonnay; Dijon Clone 95, which is known for early maturity and high intensity fruit aromatics, and Robert Young Clonal selection, which adds minerality and lower-toned apple and pear flavors.

The parcels were hand-picked on different days, barreled into 30% new Hungarian Trust and 20% new Demptos Allier Burgundy barrels, with the balance going into two-year old French Burgundy barrels acquired from Kistler Vineyards.

The wines were fermented in the innovative OXO barrel rack system, allowing for a superior marriage of the oak flavors and the wine, while maintaining fruit aromatics. This closed system technology also imparts a luxuriously creamy texture to the wine. About 20% of the barrels went through spontaneous malo-lactic fermentation. The wine has aromas of sliced apple and toasted grains. On the palate, it is rich and mouth-filling with flavors of pear, citrus, honey and vanilla, which are balanced by bright natural acidity. This natural crispness makes th

2004 Claret, Carmody McKnight Vineyard
Paso Robles

Our 2004 Carmody McKnight Vineyard Claret is a vineyard designated blend of 39% Cabernet Franc, 33% Merlot, 28% Cabernet Sauvignon. The Carmody Mcknight Vineyard is located in west ... moreern Paso Robles on Chinney Rock Road in the rain shadow of the Santa Lucia Coastal mountain range. This dark purple wine had aromas of ripe cherry, blackberries and clove. Rich fruit flavors of cherry and plum are followed by tannins and a long finish. The bright fruit, low pH, and excellent structure of this wine make it a candidate for extended cellaring. This wine can be served with rich cuts of meat, poultry or with pasta.

2004 Merlot
Paso Robles

The Carmody McKnight and El Pomar Junction Vineyards are two wonderful sites for Paso Robles Merlot. Despite hot, windy conditions during June of 2003, little berry shatter occurre ... mored and we were blessed with a large set of small-berried Merlot clusters which produced a deeply pigmented and flavorful wine.

Fruit was hand-harvested, inoculated with cultured yeast, fermented in separate lots, then pressed together prior to barreling down. We employed 50% new Trust Hungarian oak, and 50% two to three year-old Demptos and Seguin Moreau thin stave Chateau-style barrels to age the wine 18 months. Prior to bottling, we added 13% Cabernet Franc to lift the aromatics and firm the structure of the wine. This dark Merlot has aromas of anise seed, ripe berry, olive and cigar box spices. On the palate, the wine is tightly structured with moderately firm, persistent tannins. Enjoy with grilled or lightly smoked foods, barbecued meats and braised root vegetables.

2004 Negrette, Caleri Vineyard
San Benito County

Negrette is the principal grape of the Cotes du Frontonais near the town of Toulouse in southern France. This deeply pigmented wine shares elements of both Pinot Noir and Syrah Noi ... morer.
