Carignane

9229 visitors
Carignane is a Spanish variety of grape that originated in Cariñena, Aragon and was later transplanted to Sardinia, elsewhere in Italy, France, Algeria, and much of the New World.

Carignane is responsible for huge quantities of mediocre or poor wine; nevertheless, when it is grown on a slope, to lower the yield, as is done in Sardinia, or grown on very old, low-yielding vines, as in parts of California, it can produce a wine with good body, color, and character with a characteristic harshness and astringency that diminishes with age. In California, the grape is not often used to make varietal wines, but producers such as Ravenswood, Cline and Mayo Family Winery make notable varietals from old vines.

It is often blended with Cinsaut, Grenache, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Mourvèdre, Merlot, and/or many other grapes, especially in the Languedoc region of France, where it is very widely planted but now on the decline. It has an upright growth habit and can be grown without a trellis. It was crossed to Cabernet Sauvignon to give Ruby Cabernet.

2005 Chameleon Carignane North Coast

NEW RELEASE! This deeply-colored and finely-nuanced wine was crafted from 55-year-old vines in Solano County’s Green Valley. Light, sandy-loam soils combined with warm days and ...morecool nights, thanks to its proximity to Suisun Bay, allow for full development of the flavors and intense pigmentation for which this venerable variety is renowned.

Its violet, chocolate and cherry aromas are echoed on the palate, supported on a framework of sturdy tannins and firm acidity which, while encouraging current consumption with roast chicken, turkey or pork, will carry it gracefully through the next three to four years in the bottle.

1999 Carignane
Phillips Vineyard, Brentwood

This old vine Carignane vineyard from near the Mokelumne River is farmed to a tiny yield that allows the normally large diameter Carignane grape to develop beautiful varietal chara ...morecter. We pushed to extract all we could and were richly rewarded by this structured, aromatic Rhone styled wine. The perfumed nose reveals red delicious apples, rhubarb and pepper. The mouth is full and rich, with up-front tannin that resolves to chocolate, red apples and black pepper. Some may remember when we released the '99 Carignane the first time in 2001. Now with an additional five years on oak, the fruit is still there but is accompanied by vanilla, chocolate and hazelnuts from the long oak exposure.

2004 Carignane
Ricetti Vineyards, Mendocino County

Early decades of California's wine industry found this commonly grown grape used as the backbone of blended red "jug" wines, where it provided spice and fragrance to the more heady ...more and densely colored blending grapes. Today we're lucky to revisit this heritage varietal, allowing wine lovers to appreciate Carignane for it's own qualities.

Out of respect for vines their ancestors planted, Mendocino County grape farmers Tom and Pamela Ricetti struggle to keep Carignane and other rare varietals available to us. At their Redwood Valley vineyard, Tom tills the same rich soil and prunes the same vines as his father - harvesting grapes derived from generations of labor. I'm grateful to partner with such heritage-rich growers and hope you'll try our other wines made from nearly forgotten vineyards.

1942 vines, planted in rich loamy soils, head trained, and watered only twice, contributed to this unusual big wine. It compares more with old world Spanish style wines. It has a d ...moreense full body with a velvet blackcurrant introduction, and plenty of dried herb, licorice, pepper and spice box on the middle pallet. Ending with a surprising tannic structure, this wine will drink well in the next three to four years.
