Pinot Gris

3671 visitors
Pinot gris is a white wine grape variety of the species Vitis vinifera. Thought to be a mutant clone of the Pinot noir grape, it normally has a grayish-blue fruit, accounting for its name but the grape can have a brownish pink to black and even white appearance. The word Pinot, which means pinecone in French, could have been given to it because the grapes grow in small pinecone-shaped clusters. The wines produced from this grape also vary in color from a deep golden yellow to copper and even a light shade of pink. The clone of Pinot gris grown in Italy is known as Pinot grigio.

Food Pairing: Pairs well with rice dishes, particularly a creamy white risotto with asparagus. White sauce pastas, lobsters and shellfish with delicate cream sauces are complimented by a good Pinot Gris.

2004 North Slope Pinot Gris
Sonoma

Suggestive of the Vendange Tardive ("late pick") wines of Alsace, Pinot Gris at Chalk Hill thrives on the coolest, north-facing slopes which foster long hang times and optimum ripe ...moreness.

Barrel fermented, but following Alsatian convention, in neutral oak, the wine is complex and concentrated, but without any introduced oak flavors to confound Pinot Gris’ inherent fruit aroma, already evocative of wood. Malolactic fermentations are suppressed to avoid compromising the wine’s bright acidity.

A Vietnamese curry with chicken and coconut milk is a good match for this Pinot Gris: the wine’s mineral qualities balance the richness of the coconut milk, its slight residual sugar holds up to spicy chiles, and its aromatics play off the curry’s spices.

87 Points! - Wine & Spirits Magazine, August 2007 issue
Martin Ray 2006 Mendocino County Pinot Gris is made from grapes carefully selected from Nelson Family Vineyards ...morenorthwest of Hopland in the cool Mendocino County wine region. Mendocino County, similar to our home in the Russian River Valley, is known for its cool daytime temperatures often accompanied by morning and evening fog due to the coastal influence.

HARVEST NOTES
The 2006 harvest was an excellent vintage for Mendocino County. After a cool, wet spring, the vintage moved along quite slowly. This longer than normal ripening period allowed the vines to produce mature, intense fruit without high sugars.

WINE NOTES
Our Martin Ray Pinot Gris was partly aged in French oak barrels, resulting in a rich, yet refreshing wine. Rich floral aromatics lead to flavors of luscious fresh peaches and creamy vanilla. This wine has a full mouthfeel and finishes soft and long.
