Merlot is a red wine grape that is used as both a blending grape and for varietal wines. Merlot-based wines usually have medium body with hints of berry, plum, and currant. Its softness and fleshiness, combined with its earlier ripening, makes Merlot an ideal grape to blend with the sterner, later-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon. This flexibility has helped to make it one of the most popular red wine varietals in the United States and Chile.

When tannin maturity and flavor development have reached their o ...moreptimum stage the grapes are harvested, and not a moment before. This fanaticism for ripeness is evident in our Merlot, a wine that is plush, elegant and expresses remarkable concentrated fruit flavors with our hallmark supple tannins.

The 2002 vintage was noted for the ideal combination of warm weather and long hang time, which provided perfect conditions for fully ripened fruit. Additionally, slightly lower yields and small berries further enhanced the concentrated flavors in the fruit and ultimately the wine. This is our richest vintage to date.

The 2000 vintage began early with budbreak occurring in the third week of March. Rapid vine growth gave an indication of an early harvest. The Merlot vines began flowering by the s ...moreecond week of May under beautiful skies. A severe heat wave in mid June caused some of the newly set berries to desiccate, thus reducing the crop. Warm days and cool nights were the norm from July through September, allowing for flavor and tannin development, while retaining the natural grape acids. The Merlot was harvested at an average of 23.5 Brix. Our 2000 Napa Valley Merlot is our best effort to date. This wine displays a deep red color and aromas of black cherry, plums, and cassis. Beneath the primary fruit characters are oak-influenced notes of cedar and mocha. On the palate this wine has rich fruit and ripe but firm tannins. While enjoyable now, our 2000 Merlot will develop additional layers of earth and tobacco with additional bottle age.

Overlaying the delicious Merlot fruit component is the Medium + toast (think roasted espresso bean), caramel, vanilla and spice contribution of quality Radoux barrels.
Bright on the entry and well-integrated in terms of tannins, this bottle would lay down well over the next 6-8 years or pair beautifully with the lamb loin or rare duck breast on the table this very evening.

DaKine Vineyard, is nestled at the bottom of an east-facing hill on Westside Road in Healdsburg. The vineyard's original owner obtained budwood from the â€œ3 Palmsâ€ Merlot vineya ...morerd in Napa Valley and planted 3 acres on AXR1 rootstock in 1988. In addition, Â¾ acre of Malbec was established. In 1995 three more acres of Chardonnay (on 5C rootstock) were budded over to Merlot (unknown clone). In 2005, Oded bought the property from Mondavi/Arrowood and began farming the grapes. This is the first vintage Longboard made from these grapes.

â€œDaKineâ€ (pronounced Dah-kine) comes from the Pidgin Hawaiian language and is often used to describe a great event. Unlike most Merlots destined to be blended into other wines, we decided this vineyard makes a wine that is superb by itself. The 2005 DaKine Merlot is lush with vanilla and blueberry aromas that lead to a generous mid-palate of full and sweet tannins, soy and dark chocolate flavors. The finish is long and slightly spicy, we believe it will age well in the next 7 years.

The fruit for this wine was chosen from the one particular block that produces grapes bursting with the sce ...morent of violets and rose petals. The fruit fermented for thirteen days on the skins, followed by a light press to retain the clarity and elegance of the wine. The wine was aged in one-year-old French barrels for 22 months.

This wine is soft, round and mouth filling. There are distinct aromas and flavors of strawberries and raspberries with a beautiful balance. The lingering, elegant finish leaves your mouth full of the rich plums, tobacco, chocolate, and roses. As the wine remains open, the layers continue to open up, giving each taste another nuance.
Enjoy this with grilled and braised dishes, pork, or pasta.
