2004 Merryvale Chardonnay Carneros Reserve

This wine was carefully assembled from our best lots from the cool Carneros viticultural area both in Napa and Sonoma. It is mostly a combination of wines made from Dijon clones an ...mored flavorful and low-yielding See’s selection vines. The flavor of the fruit is complemented by the toasty oak spice, richness and complexity of native yeast fermentation in new French oak barrels. Due to relatively warm, dry weather in early spring, budbreak started very early in 2004 and the first stages of vine growth went very quickly.

2003 Merryvale Merlot Reserve

Due to unfavorable spring weather inhibiting pollination, the Merlot crop in 2003 was very small. The fruit that did finally make it produced wines with rich, concentrated structur ...moree and dark fruit flavors. The core of the 2003 Reserve Merlot blend consists of lots from several vineyards in the Carneros region of Napa Valley. The O’Brien family vineyard in the Oak Knoll District south of Yountville has produced consistently high quality since our first production from there in 2000. Both regions are in the cooler, fog-influenced southern end of the valley. We included a small lot of Petit Verdot from La Herradura on Conn Valley Road to add some depth and richness to the wine’s structure.

The 2003 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon blend is made up of a few of our best lots from vineyards in Oakville, Oak Knoll District and Rutherford. Weather in spring created such poor se ...moret that there was very little Merlot to use for blending in 2003. The Cabernet Sauvignon crop was not affected and the wines turned out very dense and concentrated. A few barrels of our best Cabernet Franc lot went into the blend to round out the mouthfeel and add a little aromatic complexity.

This wine was selected barrel by barrel from our finest NapaValley Chardonnay lots. All of the lots were from the cool end of NapaValley, either in the windy Carneros or just north ...more of the city limits of Napa. The vineyards are mostly planted with Dijon clones which produce low yields and concentrated, intensely flavored fruit. Each lot was fermented in predominantly new French oak barrels from our favorite coopers. All of the wine was uninoculated and fermented with native yeast, a method that accentuates the richness of the wine’s mouthfeel. The wine is dense, rich and complex, with a long smoky, toasty oak finish.

Profile is a blend of many of our finest lots of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, chosen for their concentration, depth of flavor and fine tannin struct ...moreure. This wine was aged in mostly new French oak chateau ferre barrels and bottled unfiltered. It is opulently structured and very dark. This wine should develop complexity with up to ten years in the bottle and hold for many years after that.

We took our Alexander Valley Cab, our Cole Ranch Merlot, some Syrah ...more from our new Everett Ridge property, and added a tincture of Bacigalupi Petite Sirah. We arrived at a very good bottle of wine. And we priced the wine to make it a terrific value. The Gran Roja (Spanish for “Big Red”) begins with ripe blackberry, plum and oak scents. The mouth has wonderful flavors of juicy dark cherry, plum and spice, with medium tannins. The finish is long and spicy. While it will pair well with the fare that accompanies a traditional Bordeaux wine, Gran Roja is terrific by itself. 498 cases.
