Aglianico

10763 visitors
Aglianico is a red wine grape grown in the Campania and Basilicata regions of Italy. The grape is believed to have originated in Greece, introduced to Italy by the Phoenicians around the same time as the Gaglioppo vine. The name is in fact a corruption of ’Ellenico’ one of italian adjectives to indicate ’Greek’. Another ethymology derivates the name Aglianico from a corruption of ’Apulianicum’ the roman adjective which indicates entire southern Italy in latin age.

Wines produced from Aglianico tend to be full bodied with firm tannins and high acidity making this a wine that has aging potential. The rich flavors in Aglianico make it conducive for matching with rich meats such as lamb.

The PICASSO RED WINE is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. The grapes were hand picked and fermented using 100% whole berries to obtain optimal fruit aromas while extracting ...morefewer tannins. The wine was aged in predominately neutral oak, to retain the fruit as the primary attribute. The Syrah was co-fermented with 20% Viognier. The resulting wine displays fruit forward aromas of black cherry, plum, and banana with hints of amaretto and dried fruit. The structure is medium bodied with a red berry finish.

We picked this fruit on the 5th and 6th of October, first the Pommard clone then the Mt. Eden. As always, we destemmed the fruit into open-topped fermenters where it was handled ge ...morently with daily manual punch-downs. We then aged the wine in all French oak barrels, one-third of which were new. The dramatic nose is marked by aromas of deep black-fruit liqueur, pomegranate and floral notes. Its dense, rich mouthfeel belays supple tannins that encourage drinking now but also offer structure enough to support cellaring for 7-10 years.

Our inaugural release of Aglianico! This grape is believed to have originated in Greece and brought to Italy by the Phoenicians. Today it is grown in the Campania and Basilicata re ...moregions. There are less than 20 acres of Aglianico planted in the United States. Aglianico generally displays a deep garnet color and rich satiny texture with earthy aromas such as coffee and leather. Like Sangiovese and Barbera, Aglianico is an acid driven wine which allows for some aging and pairs well with hearty dishes or rich sauces.

While composing this blend of 55% Cabernet, 25% Merlot and 11% Cabernet Franc from Madrona Ranch and 9% Petite Verdot from Thorevilos vineyard, we looked to capture a truly Bordeau ...morex style blend with California pedigree. In order to make the best blend year after year, we rely on our French consultant, Alain Raynaud, to give us his thoughtful insight. Slowly and meticulously we construct the blend together, and the 2005 vintage was no exception.

Winemaker notes from Allison Tauziet:

"The 2005 vintage of our left bank style Cariad blend makes a formidable comparison to a true Bordeaux first growth. In a cooler vintage such as 2005, we truly experienced weather more comparable to that in Bordeaux, and I think that is reflected in the freshness and depth of this wine. The gravelly, fresh leather and mineral aromatics mimic those in one of my favorite wines of Pauillac, Chateau Latour. The Cariad boasts more black fruit notes of sweet black cherries, black licorice, floral and honeysuckle, yet it also flirts with an elusive savory character you find in asian plum sauce and soy sauce. This vintage of Cariad really showcases the balance between richness and elegance that you can a

This admired Italian varietal is celebrated for its freshness and floral profile, and this edition is no exception. Pretty aromatics of delicate honeysuckle ride on a wave of pear, ...more melon and Gravenstein apple. The wine shows good body, with well-balanced crispness. Brilliant notes of white peach and mango are accented with a hint of lime zest. The layered finish presents subtle touches of honey and mineral. This wine is a great starter or an ideal complement to salad and seafood. Chill it to 55°, open and feel yourself swept away to Italia! The grapes were grown by long-time winegrower Low Stone of Fox Hill Vineyards in Mendocino County, California, who specializes in unique Italian varietals. The cool breezes of the Pacific Ocean and the hot days in this area create the ideal climate for flavorful development of these grapes. Tocai Friulano is a native grape of the Friuli region of Italy, north of Venic.
