Zinfandel

2003 Zinfandel
Sonoma Valley

Two small Glen Ellen vineyards that were planted with our input provided the lion’s share of the grapes in this blend, Shumahi Ranch and Meeks Hilltop Ranch. We did bottle a small amount of Hilltop as a vineyard designate for the first time in 2003, and would like to do so with Shumahi in the future. Although we prefer to bottle wines that express individual site character, our primary goal is to make the best wine possible, and in 2003 the two wines complemented each other nicely. This is a classic Zinfandel, with briar, blackberry, raspberry and black pepper. There are added notes of brown spices and caramel. It is very fruity, dry, has moderate alcohol (for Zin), and isn’t buried under tons of new oak and residual sugar as is way too common these days.
