2003 Charbono Graziano Vineyard, Mendocino County
Common 50 years ago, acreage is now at 83 in California, up from a low of 47 left in the world only five years ago. It nearly disappeared because all the Charbono left was old head-pruned vines that were severely virused and weak. Struggling to ripen their fruit, the big clusters become vulnerable to mildew and rot from early rains. Only the most patient growers can wait long enough for maturity. One of Napa Valley's original wineries, Inglenook, produced memorable Charbono, many of which still retain their drinkability 20 years later. Our flagship wine, this lovely relic is enjoying a rebirth and finding fans all over the country. |
