Petite Sirah

8274 visitors
It is definitely one of the grapes known as the Petite Sirah variety which is extensively planted in California, although other analysis has shown that in vineyards with the most reliable planting records it may only be one of three distinct varieties known collectively as Petite Sirah.

Dry Creek Valley

The 2005 Petite Sirah from 2 vineyards west side of Dry Creek exhibits a luscious ink-color with fruit-driven aromas of blackberry, blueberry and a hint of raspberry. The intense f ...morelavors follow true to the nose with a touch of cola, black pepper and a lingering finish of warm vanilla and dark chocolate. 2004 Petite Sirah

The Nadeau Family Vintners’ 2004 Petite Sirah (80% Petite Sirah, 20% Zinfandel) is estate produced (which means we grew the grapes and made the wine here). About two thirds of the ...moregrapes are from trellised vines while the remainder of the fruit was harvested from the head-pruned vines which surround the tasting room and winery.

The wine from these grapes is certainly dark with a surprising amount of fruitiness given that Petite Sirah has a reputation for being a cumbersome, tannic wine. Layers of fruit mingle with well-integrated oak, making this a wonderful wine to accompany strong cheeses and robust fare.

Heart Arrow Ranch, Mendocino

Boasting incredibly dark and opague purple color, the wine is replete with aromas of voilets, underbrush, licorice, and a varietally-correct and pungent berry/stone matrix in great ...more concentration. In the mouth, the wine's fruit is initially overcome by very firm chalky tannins, but with aeration, the abundant fruit and semi-sweet chocolate notes come to the front and provide beautiful, silky texture.

Another blockbuster from the vineyard Robert Parker has deemed “grand cru” of California. “Dark” is the word for this wine; as in dark purple/black color – try opaque – and dark fr ...moreuits such as blackberries and plums. This wine delivers what most Petite Sirah drinkers are looking for: rich, full texture, massive structure and big tannins.

What may be a little surprising, however, is the level of depth and complexity retained within all this power in the form of spice, cinnamon & chocolate notes.

Extended aging in older Francois Freres French oak barrels has served to round out any rough edges texturally and some spicy vanilla nuances.

2005 Reserve Petite Sirah
Russian River Valley

Our Estate Grown Petite Sirah grapes received, as always, very special care during the 2005 growing season. We are fortunate to have several blocks of Petite Sirah each with varyin ...moreg age, elevation and sun exposure. We hand-thinned the crop and did extensive deleafing to expose the fruit which maximizes pigment in the berry’s skin. All this work paid off and allowed us to get concentrated and healthy fruit. The favorable growing season coupled with sun-exposed fruit helped develop rich tannins and let the complex flavors of cassis, blackberry, coffee and spice fully develop. As with past vintages, the wine should age well over the next 8-to-10 years. So that the tannins will soften and the fruit will shine, we recommend holding this wine until mid-2007 before drinking. Should you want to drink the wine earlier, we suggest decanting a half hour before serving.

Petite can be enjoyed with many foods and can make a meal more memorable. Our suggestions for pairing are: Ahi tuna, game birds (especially duck, goose and quail), turkey, venison, lamb, pork and beef. If you are preparing gravy, try adding a tablespoon of wine to each cup of gravy to integrate the food with the wine
